The Southern California Regional Event will be going down this weekend (Friday May 17th to Sunday May 19th), in Del Mar, CA.  The workouts for the weekend are posted here: http://games.crossfit.com/workouts/regionals. If you are interested in going, let us know (in person or facebook message or email) – we can try and set up carpools to go down or get a group together to take the AMTRAK train.  We invite, suggest, recommend EVERYONE make the short drive (or train), down to Del Mar and check out the event.  Our very own Jesse Bazernick, will be competing in the event on a team, so if anything you should come and cheer him on (go get ‘em kid!!!)! Hand Care....

Look familiar?  A post like this is probably long over due.  Better late than never right?   I will get straight to the point, it is all about how you take care of your hands (this is a reference to those nasty calluses).  Because of the constant friction and pressure, calluses are going to develop.  The skin in that area gets tough, hardens and gets bigger.  Over time, that thick piece of skin catches on the bar and we get a nasty tear.  What are we going to do?  Stop doing pull-ups?  (yeah right, you wish)
The solution is fairly really simple.  Get ride of them before the bar rips them off for you.  Invest in a callus shaver and a pumice stone.  Both items can be purchased at CVS, Target, Walgreens, etc... for around $10.  As your calluses develop, shave them down with the shaver then smooth them away from the pumice stone.  Watch the video posted at the bottom for a quick tutorial.

1st Annual Sexy for Summer Paleo Challenge

Summer is right around the corner. Us Angelinos know SoCal summers never wait for June and neither should you! What does that mean? It means it's time for shirts to come off and the bikinis to come out of the closet!!! So in preparation for the upcoming bikini season CrossFit SandBox will be hosting our very first SEXY FOR SUMMER PALEO CHALLENGE!!

If you have never heard of the Paleo Diet, don't worry. We will have a nutritionist come in to speak about the diet. She will talk about everything, from all the benefits of following a Paleo diet to things you should eat and stay away from. Unlike most other diets, the Paleo Diet is a diet of inclusion. We aren’t here to restrict you from eating enough to feel full or taking harmful supplements that artificially bolster your system for temporary weight loss. Rather, the Paleo diet focuses on high quality all-natural foods that our bodies have been designed to fuel with since the days of our Paleolithic caveman ancestors.

So whether you have been thinking about it or have already been doing it in small doses, here is your chance to do it with some structure and a lot of motivation.

How it works:

On March 16th, we will take before pictures, take all your measurements (including measuring your body fat using a dunk tank), and put you through a baseline WOD. On March 18th at 8pm we will have a Paleo nutrition seminar at the box to educate you about why you should be eating Paleo and how you can do it conveniently. We will break you into small paleo-watching groups and, over the next 6 weeks, we will check your WOD and diet logs, organize Paleo dinners, and do everything we can to keep you on track. On April 27th, we will re-test everything.

The best part about doing the challenge is that you’re not in it alone! You’ll have all your fellow challengers and CFSBX community to share recipes with, talk out of cravings, and have fun going Paleo with!

The top male and female will each win a free month membership as well as some other really cool prizes – as if being the biggest loser and being sexy for summer wasn’t enough. Winners are selected based on body fat lost, muscle gained, WOD performance improvement, adherence to paleo eating, and before/after pics.

Sign Me Up!

The cost to officially participate in the challenge is $100. There is a sign-up sheet at the front desk where you can pick the time slot you would like to get dunked for your body fat testing on March 16th (bring your swimsuit and towel.) We will be putting you through your benchmark WOD that same week and having the nutrition seminar on March 17th. If you are unavailable on March 16th for the body fat testing, see Brian to discuss alternative options.
