Post Whole Life Challenge

Congratulations to all the athletes that completed the 8-week Whole Life Challenge!!!  With all the birthdays, weddings, engagement parties, holidays, weekends, etc... it was a challenging couple of months!  All in all, job well done to everyone who participated.   The winners of the challenge will not be revealed until our "post challenge party" on the 12th of July.

The Whole Life Challenge is over, now what?

I wouldn't jump straight back into your old eating habits right away.  Definitely go enjoy that cheat meal you have been craving for the past 8-weeks, you all deserve it.  Slowly add things back into your diet and see how your body responds to them. You might find that your body disagrees with some of the things that you once thought were "healthy".  Think of it like this, your body has been on a vacation for the last 2 months.  Forcing all that carnage on your body is going to drive it crazy.

Remember that the point of the challenge to discover a new way of eating.  A lifestyle.  The new challenge is to continue to incorporate what you learned about eating (and yourself) into your daily life.

Just 1 Hour a Day

CrossFit has always been a place where I was able to go and escape.  An entire hour of not having to worry about anything!  Work, relationships, the weather (this doesn't really apply to Santa Monica).  My focus would switch from work to the workout.  20min AMRAPS and 150 wall balls were far more grueling than having to sit in a meeting all day.  The environment was always positive, fun, and every workout presented a new challenge.  I had something to look forward to everyday, an outlet to take out all my frustrations.  Even though at times that outlet came with anxiety.

Don't be afraid to let it loose.  Slam some weight. Push your limits. Scream as loud as you can.  And have a good time!

Haaaaaave you met Steve?

CFSBX, give it up to Steve Dress!  To say that I am proud, is an understatement.  Mr. Dress comes in and works his ass off everyday.   He constantly tests his limits and is always looking to learn something new.  His efforts have definitely paid off.  The dude is ripped!  I noticed a huge difference in his physique recently, mostly because he has tearing his shirt off during the workouts.  So I asked him if he's been doing anything differently.  His response?   "Paleo, that shit works man!"

The work, works people.  You just gotta do it.

"Squat"

I searched the interwebs for the definition of a "squat".  In case you were wondering this is what I found:

"...crouch or sit with one's knees bent and one's heels CLOSE TO OR TOUCHING one's buttocks or the back of one's thighs..."

Pretty sure this applies to exercising.

Ghee, that liquid gold...

If you have never had ghee (ghee is also known and clarified butter) before, it's magic.  Rather than rant about it myself, I took a page off the TINSTARFOODS.COM website and pasted it below.  Tin Star Foods, recently sent over a jar of the "liquid gold", which has been seen going into my eggs, my coffee, and straight into my mouth by the spoon full.  It's not exactly because I like the taste although I do enjoy it; the effects I have experienced from adding grass-fed butter to my coffee have been amazing.  Sometimes, instead of adding it to my brew I'll just shove a tablespoon in my mouth.  Those of you who have heard me talk about or even just tried "Bullet Proof Coffee" know what I'm talking about.

The following was taken directliy from tinstarfoods.com :

This buzz word is quickly taking over north America and its not surprise to us, the stuff is liquid gold. Literally.  Let’s go through a quick break down so you can now show off to your friends about your new insight on the stuff.  We promise, you’ll be dropping the word into conversation w/ the likes of Kombucha and Mala’s.
Who:  This has been used in kitchens all throughout India for thousands of years.  More importantly its heavy usage was due to the laundry list of health benefits (which we’ll get to in “why”).  While the cooks in the kitchen were (and are) putting it in every dish possible, the Ayurvedic Doctors relied on its healing properties to treat patients.  That’s right, they were building entire treatment centers in India around this special product before we knew what electricity was.
Fast forward to current days, it seems like everyone is asking where you can get some.  The Paleo community depends on it as one of the top 3 fat sources in their diets right next to Coconut Oil and Tallow.  If you haven’t heard about Ghee yet, you will, we promise.  It’s just a matter of time.

What:  Technically speaking its Lactose Free and Casein Free Clarified Butter.  Butter that has been boiled at a certain heat point so that all of the milk solids are removed from the butter. “What’s in the milk solids” you ask? That’s where all the lactose and casein sit so when we burn it off, it collects and drops to the bottom of the pan.
It’s starting to pop up in groceries stores all over the country for good reason, it is an arduous process and takes time to learn.  For people on the go, time is of the essence and taking 2 hours to make this every couple weeks just isn’t a possibility for some of us.

BUYER BEWARE:  This is the most important thing we can say about Ghee you buy in the stores. You’re probably getting the worst of the worst butter as the base for your Ghee when you’re purchasing from a big box super market.  They often take the salted or unsalted butter that doesn’t sell, and then at the end of the shelf life they turn it into Ghee.  Because of the 14-18 month shelf life they have now extended the life of their butter and made an extra dollar on something that was potentially lost.  Smart on their part but the consumers that care, need to take the extra step of researching when buying their Ghee.    Your Ghee should last about 18 months unrefrigerated on a shelf in a dark can away from the light.  If you store it properly and use it within 18 months of manufacturing, it should not go rancid.  No need to refrigerate it if it was made properly!

Where:  Milk from Ireland isn’t certified organic but thats because the label doesn't exist out there.   We spent the time looking for butter that has not been treated with Growth Hormone, Antibiotics or non GMO grass/feed.

When:  All the time.  Seriously, we eat about 4-5 tablespoons of it a day.  “BUT THAT’S A LOT OF FAT” , you say.  Yes it is, but it’s also why we stay full and away from carbs.  You can start introducing it to your kids as soon as they’re on solids.  That’s right!!!  Its full of healthy fats and Tonalin CLA.  Always consult a doctor or nutritionist when deciding the best diet/life style for you and your family.

Why: The most important reason for us personally is, it makes us feel good and it tastes good.  It tastes REALLY good.  It is one of those products that you can enjoy and reap a tremendous amount of health benefits.
Tonalin CLA:  Short for Conjugated Linoleic Acid, this fatty acid packs a punch, crucial in maintaining a healthy metabolism and weight management.  We are often asked “how do vegetarians get their Tonalin CLA if they don’t eat meat?”  Ghee.  That’s how.
1:1 Omega Fatty Acid Ratio:  If you’re sourcing the right milk for your butter/ghee, you should be getting a 1:1 Omega3 to Omega6 Amino Fatty Acid Ratio.  This is huge in making it possible to consume significant amounts of the Ghee without all the health risks associated with other oils like Corn and Vegetable Oil.
Use in Ayurvedic Medicine:  It is often prescribed for its healing and soothing elements.  It naturally cools the inside of the body and works well with all Tri Doshas: Kapha, Pitta: Vatta.  There are treatments available through the United States using Ghee for different treatments.  An example of treatments includes using Ghee in  eye baths for strained or chronic dry eyes.  It is often used to overcome moderate IBD issues and leaky gut.  We recommend finding Holistic or Ayurvedic practitioner to help you find the best solution for you.
Excellent for nursing mothers:  It’s a great way to add healthy fats to your diet while bringing nutrient dense properties into the breast milk and onto your baby.

How:  This is the most frequently asked question when we’re talking about ghee.  “It tastes great but how the heck do I use it?”  You can treat it exactly like butter.  It melts into liquid above room temp so it spreads over your cooked or steamed veggies w/ no microwaving or heating.
You can also use it to cook with at a ridiculously high smoke point.  The smoke point on Ghee (if prepared properly) is about 485 Degrees.  You heard us right. Canola and Corn oil smoke at about 225 degrees.  That  means you can cook your meats and veggies in a pan with this stuff, and then pour the left over bits on top of your dish!
Don’t over think it when it comes to ghee,  its fun to play with so be creative in the kitchen!  Try it on some warm corn tortillas or over a bed of rice with light seasoning.  If you’re low carb or grain free, then try it on your sweet potatoes or veggie medley.

Marathoning, Iron Manning, and CrossFit

Our athletes were pretty busy this past weekend...

Jamaica King completed her first 1/2 marathon in San Diego.  Tim Poydenis and Phil Pizzuti both completed a 1/2 Iron Man in Hawaii.   Just because you CrossFit, doesn't mean you can't go out there and crush everything else.  Bike, swim, run, play organized sports, be active.  You don't just come to the box and train hard everyday, enjoy the benefits of being in the best shape of your life!

Haters gonna hate

CrossFit, love it or hate has given me what no other training program has.  Results.  It has truly been able to produce any and every result that I have ever desired without ever having to compromise.  Bigger, stronger, faster, leaner.  I asked, CrossFit delivered.  People can say what they want, but they can't deny the outcome.  I've heard these 3 arguments about CrossFit from day one.   Shit, I'm guilty of believing them myself! (at one point...)

3 myths crossfit haters will tell

3 Myths CrossFit Haters Will Tell You

Anyone else ever deal with CrossFit haters? At first it was funny to have my first hater, but I seem to be picking up more, and more lately. I never really noticed them before I got my own, but they have started to pop up all over the place, and not just on my social media circles, but everyone’s.
Look I’ll be the first to admit that when I first heard about CrossFit, I was a hater. I would think peoples posts about it where annoying and cultish. Posting pictures of themselves dying in pools of sweat looked stupid. But I bit my tongue. It actually peaked my interest. I had to figure out what this CrossFit was all about, and why all these morons where doing it. Well, now I’m one of those morons, and I co-own a gym. Here are 3 Myths that CrossFit haters will have you believe.
Myth 1 – It’s too expensive
The first thing that turned me off about CrossFit was the price. Like I was going to pay nearly a car payment to work out. I had a $19 a month Snap Fitness membership that was doing me just fine, I told my fat self. All 265 lbs of me. The problem with GloBo memberships is that 95% of the people there have no idea what they are supposed to do while they are there. Then when you do go there, you do the same stuff over, and over again. Then you get bored, you plateau, you get unmotivated, then you quit. Then you still pay your membership, every month, and you never go. That is exactly what they want you to do. If everyone that was a gym membership showed up every day, there wouldn’t be enough room for them all. With CrossFit, we program everything for you. We tell you exactly what you will be doing, and how much of it you need to do. We are there coaching you, and making sure that you are doing it right. We are there to motivate you, and so are the people that you are working out with. Sure, its pricey. But these days so is going to dinner. Stay home 3–4 nights a week instead of going out to dinner, and not only have you payed for your gym membership, you probably avoided eating a bunch of shitty food thats going to go right through you anyway.
Myth 2 – Everyones Form Sucks
Look, I will admit that there are people that do CrossFit with shitty form. I had shitty form for a while. I had no idea what I was doing when I started, and neither do 90% of the people that walk through the door of my gym. But they get better, because they want to get better. Granted there are a lot of people that post videos of themselves on youtube that shouldn’t be, but Im not their dad so who am I to tell them what to do. The problem is it takes one video of some guy with crap form that gives detractors the ammo they need to say we all look like shit. Guess what! If I took video of people in 24 hour fitness I’d get a lot of footage of people doing shitty reps there too! But they’d be doing stupid crap like curls, and leg extensions. You know how many douchers do curls by whipping there hips back and forth, then they talk shit about us doing kipping pullups. Look bro, keep humping your bar and sculpting those sweet ass biceps. We’ll keep doing lifts that are functional.
Myth 3 – It’s a Cult
I wrote about this before, but I cant reiterate this point enough. CrossFit is not a cult, it’s a community, and it’s an awesome one. Instead of writing about this again, Im just going to share an awesome story that my ol’ Air Force buddy Joe shared with me:
“So I saw something really cool the other day that reminded me how awesome the CrossFit community is. Backstory: My coach (Tommy Pease) was at regionals last year and he was 3rd place going into the last WOD. He did what he had to do to hold 3rd and they announced him as a games competitor. A few minutes later they said he actually tied for 3rd and lost the tie break. Wes Piatt goes to the games. Tommy was crushed.
This year Tommy finishes the open 13th in SoCal. Our box posts on Facebook that we are getting shirts and hats designed and they’ll be available for pre-order. I scroll down the comments section and see Wes Piatt requested a hat. I thought that was really supportive. The competitive dynamic that CrossFit has is unique and the reason why it’s growing so fast. It’s something that’s lost in all the major sports. That’s why they don’t appeal to as broad of a demographic as CrossFit does.”
That right there is what CrossFit is all about. So for all those people that hate on CrossFit, go ahead and put your Beats back on, look in your mirrors, and go work out by yourselves.

CFSBX Whole Life Challenge: 5 weeks down...

We are 5 weeks into The Whole Life Challenge.  And to say the last few weeks haven't been a challenge, would be a lie.  Summer is the perfect reason to start a challenge like this.  But it is FOR SURE the hardest time to do it!  Every weekend has had it's own temptation to pull us off the train.  But we've stood our ground and resisted! (aside from a little alcohol)  What has really helped, is Holly's willingness to experiment with Paleo recipes.  And being open to recipes like Cauliflower "Rice".  I am a meat and veggies guy myself, so grilling up a steak and veggies 5-6 times a week never gets tiring.  Some people need variety, I respect that.  I highly recommend everyone play around in the kitchen, you might surprise yourself with what you come up with.  Typically most paleo dishes don't have a ton of ingredients or prep time anyway, so not having any time can't be an excuse.  Meat, vegetables, nuts and seeds....well you get the point.

Here is your chance to cook, create and experiment.  Pot Luck #2 for the WLC!  Once again, EVERYONE is invited!  Bring a dish, bring a dessert, bring a drink, bring a friend, bring yourself.

CFSBX Whole Life Challenge/Paleo Pot Luck #2
