What came first, the ring dip or the pull-up?

Yesterday, we did "Wilmont" at Santa Monica Muscle Beach.  A six round couplet of air squats and ring dips.  The 300 air squats I don't recognize as being a huge problem for any of our athletes.  Now the 150 ring dips, that is a huge order of volume!  I knew before we decided on doing this workout that many of us would struggle on the rings.  Weather it was lack of arm/shoulder strength, the ability to be stable and balanced on the rings, not being able to lock out at the top or touch your armpit to the ring. The large volume would surely identify a weakness.

If the solution to crappy ring dips was to do more ring dips, then this post would be over.  The reality is that the problem is actually your push-ups.  If you struggle with ring dips, pull-ups, handstand push-ups, overhead press or bench press, then I will confidently bet that your push-up game is weak as well.

The push-up is as fundamental of a movement as it comes, but it is often underrated and overlooked.   Developing your push-up will come with a huge strength carry over to many other movements.  You may have heard me say this before, it is the foundation of all things press related.  Consider the list of movements again:  ring dips, pull-ups, handstand push-ups, overhead press, bench press.  Imagine yourself doing each movement.  You would absolutely benefit from developing the anterior shoulder, delts, pecs, and triceps.  It's as easy as the push-up.  Weak push-ups = weak ______ (fill in the blank).

Make it your immediate goal to improve your push-ups, today.  Modifying the push-up is a great way to teach the proper mechanic and range of motion.  We must progress through the modifications rather than rely on them to get us through the workout.

You often hear, "You have to crawl before you learn to walk.".   Well in this case, you need to be able to push yourself off the floor, in order to do anything else.

Stevia, what's that?

Stevia used to be a thing for me.  When I started with paleo, it was hard to stay away from sugar in general.  So like most, I searched for alternatives.  Naturally, stevia seemed to be the right choice.  "A natural sweetener", or so I thought.  As long as it wasn't processed sugar, I was sold.  I eventually gave up on it altogether, because frankly it didn't even taste like sugar.  I found this article about stevia, and thought it was pretty interesting.  Never knew it was used as a contraceptive.  Who would have thought.

Happy Birthday America

July 4th is hands down one of my favorite holidays.  Summer sun, the beach, good company, and a few too many beers is always a recipe for a good time.   Wishing everyone out there a happy and safe 4th of July!!!!

Post Whole Life Challenge

Congratulations to all the athletes that completed the 8-week Whole Life Challenge!!!  With all the birthdays, weddings, engagement parties, holidays, weekends, etc... it was a challenging couple of months!  All in all, job well done to everyone who participated.   The winners of the challenge will not be revealed until our "post challenge party" on the 12th of July.

The Whole Life Challenge is over, now what?

I wouldn't jump straight back into your old eating habits right away.  Definitely go enjoy that cheat meal you have been craving for the past 8-weeks, you all deserve it.  Slowly add things back into your diet and see how your body responds to them. You might find that your body disagrees with some of the things that you once thought were "healthy".  Think of it like this, your body has been on a vacation for the last 2 months.  Forcing all that carnage on your body is going to drive it crazy.

Remember that the point of the challenge to discover a new way of eating.  A lifestyle.  The new challenge is to continue to incorporate what you learned about eating (and yourself) into your daily life.

Just 1 Hour a Day

CrossFit has always been a place where I was able to go and escape.  An entire hour of not having to worry about anything!  Work, relationships, the weather (this doesn't really apply to Santa Monica).  My focus would switch from work to the workout.  20min AMRAPS and 150 wall balls were far more grueling than having to sit in a meeting all day.  The environment was always positive, fun, and every workout presented a new challenge.  I had something to look forward to everyday, an outlet to take out all my frustrations.  Even though at times that outlet came with anxiety.

Don't be afraid to let it loose.  Slam some weight. Push your limits. Scream as loud as you can.  And have a good time!
